Gould Garden Revisited

The veggies in our garden are growing well. Here's an update on what's been going on:

We have 3 big banana peppers almost ready to be picked and used on pita sandwiches or pesto pizza.

Our basil is still going strong--we've gotten 4 batches of pesto made (3 cups of basil used for each) and lots has been used in marinades and salads, like the panzanella salad that I made last week--so good!

While the regular tomatoes are still pretty small, our grape tomatoes are ripening quickly. In fact, most barely make it inside the house since I tend to pick and eat them as a snack while I am watering them. Ella enjoys locating the "baby tomatoes" and pointing them out. She says "They're so cute!"

As I learned soon after planting a couple of cucumber plants on the side of the house, they are spreading wildly. We have tons of yellow flowers, but I didn't think they were going to grow into cucumbers until Rob and I found this yesterday when checking underneath a mass of thick, rough leaves:

We realized we had a huge cucumber under there, a few medium sized ones, and lots of little sprouts of cucumbers--very exciting when I was expecting none! I think we'll have a lot of cucumbers at once, so I am going to be checking my cookbook for some good recipes (or hoping to trade some for a few of our neighbors' summer squash).

  2. Um, Jennifer, cucumbers are the craziest plants!! First they do grow like crazy, and you should start doing research now on how to make all kinds of cucumber recipes. You may actually get sick of cucumbers. We plant one every year and by the end of summer, I don't care if I ever see a cucumber again. And those leaves are really sharp!!!

  3. Jennifer: Looks like you have many talents. Boy, I bet Rob appreciates all the delicious dishes that you make. "He must feel like a King" with such a wonderful "Queen". Great work Jennifer.
